Eric Eeckhout1984年毕业于比利时布鲁塞尔自由大学医学院。截至1991年,Eric Eeckhout在该医学院附属医院做心脏科医师,并特别显示了对于介入心脏病学的浓厚兴趣。从1991年开始,他加入瑞士洛桑大学医学院附属医院(CHUV),并于1999年,成为该医院导管室主任。他的临床方向包括:心脏瓣膜病,成人先心病的经皮介入治疗,急性冠脉综合症,冠脉生理学等。在冠脉介入并发症的预防及治疗方面,Eric Eeckhout有极高的学术成就。从1998年开始,他于洛桑创建了国际冠脉介入并发症研讨会。现在是EuroPCR冠脉介入并发症专场的主席。同时,他也是欧洲心脏病学学会(European Society of Cardiology, ESC)大会议程编排委员会成员,也是该组织核心委员会(Focus Committee)成员.

Stem cell therapy is an emerging and exciting potential new treatment option in ischemic heart disease. In particular, patients who suffer from large myocardial infarction might benefit from cell regeneration as the prognosis is severely impaired.
Clinical trials in this field have shown conflictual and opposite results making it difficult for the clinician to understand the true role of this still experimental therapy. The results of these trial may be explained by several factors.
The article by Yang et al in the European Heart Journal of May 2 2008 provides further insight into this issue. The authors studied a total of 28 Chinsese mini-pigs in whom they created artificially an anterior myocardial infarction. Before creating the myocardial infarction, the pigs had been randomized to pretreatment with artovastatin and/or injection of autologous bone marrow mesenchimal cells after the myocardial infarction into a double randomization model, thereby created 4 groups of 7 pigs for analysis. Six weeks after the intervention, the pigs were studied by MRI and SPECT indicating that in the group of combined artorvastatin pretreatment and stem cell therapy the best perfusion and myocardial contractility. The authors postulate an effect on apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation as possible mechanisms.
This landmark paper reveals important information indicating for the first time to potential beneficial role of statins in the setting of stem cell therapy. Therefore, statin therapy should probably be considered in the methodogy of future clinical stem cell trials.
